Renting a car in Poland without a credit card: how it works
25.08.2026 · 7 min read
A credit card is not a legal requirement but a way of holding the deposit. It can be replaced by a debit card, a bank transfer or a cash deposit — many Polish firms, especially local ones and those doing long-term rentals, accept these. The rule: settle how the deposit will be paid before you travel to collect the car, because that is where rentals most often fall apart.
Where the requirement comes from
It is neither a legal requirement nor a whim. The firm needs security against damage, fines or non-return, and a credit card gives it the most convenient mechanism: an amount can be held without being taken. The money stays with the customer but cannot be spent.
On a debit card that hold does not work everywhere or always — the bank may simply take the amount or decline the transaction. Hence the caution of the large international chains.
But that is their policy, not a market rule. Local firms and long-term rentals are usually more flexible.

What replaces a credit card
| Method | How common | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Debit card | common | needs sufficient balance; the amount may genuinely be taken rather than held |
| Bank transfer of the deposit | common in long-term rental | agree the return deadline in advance |
| Cash deposit | with local firms | only against a receipt, otherwise there is nothing to prove |
| Deposit in instalments | in ride-hailing rentals | must be in the contract, not verbal |
The last two are precisely what separates a local firm from an international chain: it takes on more risk in exchange for a customer who would otherwise never reach it.

What is genuinely asked of a foreign national
The list is shorter than people assume:
- A valid driving licence. For ordinary rental a Polish one is not required — a foreign licence is enough within its period of validity.
- Identification.
- A workable deposit method — the point on which everything actually turns.
An important distinction: the Polish-licence and 185-day residence rule applies to working in the apps, not to ordinary rental. If you are taking a car for yourself, that requirement does not apply to you.

One call that saves a day
The most common failure runs like this: someone finds a car, agrees a price, travels across the city to collect it — and is told about a credit card they do not have.
One question asked in advance prevents it:
How is the deposit taken — a card hold, a transfer or cash? Will a debit card do?
If the answer is evasive, ask for it in writing in a message. A message is a document too.
What not to do
- Do not open a credit card in a hurry for one rental. It will not arrive in a day, and there is usually a solution without it.
- Do not hand over a cash deposit without a receipt. At return there will be nothing to prove — exactly the same problem as with ride-hailing deposits.
- Do not assume a phone wallet substitutes for a credit card. There is still a card underneath, and if the firm specifically wants a credit card, Apple Pay or Google Pay changes nothing.
Where your chances are better
Market practice is fairly clear:
- Local firms are more flexible than chains — filling the car matters more to them than corporate policy.
- Long-term rental is more flexible than daily. For a month or more a firm will more readily accept a transfer: the customer is better known and the commitment longer.
- Ride-hailing rental is the most flexible segment of all. Instalment deposits are normal there, because the whole segment works with people who have no savings.

In the ViroCars catalogue the deposit amount is a listing field, so you know the figure before the conversation — leaving only the method to settle with the fleet.

Frequently asked
Yes, with many firms. The credit card is not a legal requirement but a way of holding the deposit, so a debit card, transfer or cash deposit often substitutes. Settle it before you travel to collect the car.
Because a credit card allows an amount to be held without being taken, which is the cheapest security for the firm. On a debit card that hold does not work everywhere or always.
A debit card with sufficient balance, a bank transfer of the deposit, a cash deposit against a receipt, or a deposit in instalments — the last being more common in ride-hailing rentals.
A valid driving licence, identification, and a workable payment method. App work additionally requires a Polish licence and 185 days of residence, but ordinary rental does not.
Do not argue — call the next firm and ask about the deposit before setting off. The card requirement is internal policy and varies enormously between companies.
