Renting a Toyota Corolla: why everyone has one

A day with a Toyota Corolla in Poland costs 120–200 zł, a week 550–850 zł and a month 1,800–2,400 zł. The hybrid does 4–5 l/100 km around town, which at 1,500 km a month is roughly 400 zł of fuel. It is the cheapest car in its class to run, which is why it is everywhere.
The Corolla is everywhere, and not by accident. It is in rental fleets, company fleets and leasing books because it is the cheapest car in its class to run and, at the same time, one nobody has to learn.

The gap between a day and a month reaches double per day. If the car is needed for longer than a week, work out both before taking the short one "just in case".
Consumption is the real reason for its popularity
The Corolla hybrid genuinely does 4–5 l/100 km in town. At 1,500 km a month that is about 400 zł of fuel. The same distance in a petrol car this size is 700–900 zł.
One thing matters here: this is a classic hybrid, not a plug-in. There is no socket, no charger to hunt for, and no point asking about electric range — the car charges its own battery under braking. In town it runs on the electric motor most of the time, which is where the figures come from.
On a motorway the advantage melts away: at 130 km/h the hybrid does 5.5–6.5 l/100 km, about what a good diesel manages. The Corolla is a town car and it is in town that it earns its keep.
What to expect at collection
- A deposit of 500–1,500 zł — the lowest shelf on the market, because the value of the car is equally predictable.
- A mileage cap on monthly rentals: 1,500–3,000 km, then 0.50–0.80 zł per kilometre.
- Insurance without surprises: an excess of 1,000–2,500 zł is normal.
When to pay for something else
A Corolla stops being enough in two situations. The first is luggage: 361 litres in the saloon is not a holiday for five. The second is a long run fully loaded: five adults over 600 km will notice this is a compact.
In both cases an estate or the class above costs 20–40% more and solves the problem. In every other case it is hard to find a reason to pay it.
